Term 1 Week 5

During investigation time on Monday the students created their own paper rockets. They then went outside and tested the rockets to see if they would launch off the foot pump launching pad. The students took it in turns to test out their rockets and made any adjustments needed before retesting.
The Rainbow Team had wonderful visit from the Sailor Asthma show. We learnt lots about the triggers for asthma and how to treat asthma.
On Tuesday we went to our first kapa haka session of the term. The students learnt new waiata a ringa from Liz and Te our wonderful kapa haka teachers.
On Wednesday  we had our first Footsteps dance session. The instructor Kate broke each dance move down into manageable chunks for the students to follow.
Dramatic play has been thriving during investigation time this week with the introduction of a medical and building kit. Its been amazing to see the ways the students have combining their literacy skills through the imaginative play,
This week many students had the book 'The Boat" during their reading groups. On Thursday we used the information in that book to create our very own boats using recycled material. The students had to find a suitable base that would float. Next they used a straw for a mast and finally created a sail which was attached to the boat with string. The students tested out their boats on water to check they floated and made minor adjustments where needed.
This week we have been reading a lot of Greedy Cat stories. For our art lesson today we drew our own Greedy Cat and then used dye to colour. Our learning was about drawing a large cat, adding detail and using our equipment correctly. We learned how to wipe the dye brush on the side of the jar to stop too much dye dripping onto our paper.
On Friday Room 14 had their first PMP session for the year run by our awesome instructor  Rachel.

The Perceptual Motor Programme (PMP) is a step-by-step programme, designed and individualised for the development of PERCEPTUAL KNOWLEDGE and JUDGEMENT.
Perceptual knowledge/judgement comes from physical and sensory experiences that are repeated over and over. The perceptions that are formed over time help determine how children react to their environment, to others, and to new ideas.
